Vive Les Jeux! A Guide to the 2024 Paris Olympics

Every two years, I enmesh myself in a delightful two weeks of global competition in the form of the Olympics. I’m obsessed with the Games – whether I’m taking in sports that I love year in and year out (like gymnastics and tennis) or I’m watching competitions I only catch during the Olympics (like swimming, diving, and rowing).

I know I’m not alone in this obsession. Pair this incredible exhibition of sport with a beautiful city, and chef’s kiss – there’s nothing better.

Yup – the City of Lights is gearing up to host a spectacular Summer Olympics in 2024! From July 26 to Aug. 11, Paris will be the center stage for the world's greatest athletes as they compete for glory. But what makes these Games unique? This year, the Olympics will embrace innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity, promising an unforgettable experience for both athletes and viewers.

A Focus on Sustainability

Paris 2024 prioritizes environmental responsibility. Venues will utilize recycled materials and renewable energy sources. The iconic Stade de France will host both the opening and closing ceremonies, minimizing construction needs. Public transportation will be the heart of the Games with dedicated lanes for athletes and spectators.

This commitment to sustainability extends beyond the Games themselves. According to the Olympics website, organizers aim to halve the carbon footprint compared to previous Olympics. Food sourcing will prioritize local, seasonal ingredients to reduce transportation emissions. Additionally, any leftover food will be redistributed, composted, or transformed into new products, minimizing waste.

Breaking New Ground

Get ready for some exciting additions to the Olympic program! Breaking, a cultural phenomenon, will make its official debut. According to the official Olympics website, breaking is more commonly known as breakdancing, whose roots can be traced to the Bronx, New York, in the ‘70s as part of hip-hop culture, and is characterized by a combination of athletic moves including spins, flips, and other complex techniques. International competitions began in the ‘90s. Learn more about this new competition

Sport climbing, a recent addition that has captivated audiences with its blend of athleticism and mental fortitude, expands with the inclusion of speed climbing. Speed climbing is a form of indoor rock climbing where athletes compete for the fastest time to the top of the climbing wall. Check out more on the Olympic Sport Climbing site.

Surfing, skateboarding, and BMX freestyle, all popular among younger audiences and bursting onto the scene in Tokyo 2020, are back for another exciting showing. These additions demonstrate the Olympics' commitment to staying relevant and appealing to a wider demographic.

Parisian Flair

The Games will be woven into the very fabric of Paris. Several iconic landmarks will serve as backdrops for competitions, creating a truly unique Olympic experience.

Beach volleyball takes center stage on the banks of the Seine River, with the Eiffel Tower looming majestically in the background. The equestrian events unfold against the backdrop of the Château de Versailles, adding a touch of royalty to the competition. Cycling's road race will wind through the picturesque streets of the city, showcasing the beauty of Paris to a global audience.

This integration of the Games with the city's historical and cultural landmarks is a first for the Olympics, so says Arch Daily, a trusted architecture information website. It promises to be a visually stunning display of athleticism set against the backdrop of Parisian charm.
